2023 Fellow

Eric-Paul Riege

Eric-Paul Riege’s practice of cross disciplinary works, and exploration of a worldview fostered by Diné philosophy, embodies the HDTS ethos of highly experimental and simultaneously deeply personal art. Riege's sculptures and performances reflect on the Diné (Navajo) philosophy of hózhó: a worldview which encompasses the values of beauty, balance, and goodness in all things physical and spiritual. For Riege, hózhó exists in the continuation of the Indigenous weaving and jewelry-making traditions inherited within his own family history, particularly from his maternal ancestors. Using a rich array of natural and synthetic materials the artist creates intricate objects which are activated through video and performance in an homage to cosmology, craft, and inherited knowledge.

Eric-Paul Riege (Diné) (b. 1994, Na’nízhoozhí, Gallup, New Mexico) holds a BFA from the University of New Mexico. His work has been exhibited in the SITElines.2018 Biennial at Site Santa Fe, Prospect.5 in New Orleans, the Toronto Biennial and he has done solo museum projects at the ICA Miami and the Hammer Museum.

The 2023 HDTS Fellowship was funded by generous support from the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation and Wilhelm Family Foundation.
